I knew Corto Maltese in 1971, when a magazine for boys, called "Corriere dei Piccoli", pubblished a comic story witten and drawn by Hugo Pratt and entitled "A Ballad of the Salty Sea". It was a maritime history of piracy, war and profound human conflicts. The sailor Corto Maltese was the main protagonist of this extraordinary adventure. I think that Corto Maltese isn't "the good" in the traditional sense. In fact he is a positive character, convinced that every man is the architect of his own fate and not the victim of " a cinical and unfair" destiny. - When I was a child - Corto says - I realized that I didn't have the line of fortune in my hand, so I took my father's razor and "zac"... I made one just the way I wanted it. - This is our hero. A disinchanted man. Free and without country. Loyal to friends and also to opponents. He isn't the devil but he isn't holy water either. For this reason Corto Maltese is different from many good and succesful comic book heroes. He can also lose because his destiny is ever signed. There is no last resort, nothing definitive but always a new route in the ocean life. This is the thought of Corto Maltese and, if we want change anything, we have to see in this way. Even when everything seems prescribed, catalogued... so damned decided and immutable.
I never read Corto Maltese but I think that he's a good character, similar as Rod Steward. He's free and Independent, but so aren' t several people disorientated by fake news...
RispondiEliminaIt's true. Corto Maltese is a disenchanted character. He is very different from the men of our time. Generally speaking, they are gullible and disoriented people. Corto, on the other hand, never loses his compass. I think that Rod Stewart's song is suitable to accompany this post.
EliminaIn life you always have to find new routes.
RispondiEliminaLife asks us to be careful but also to change our way of being when necessary.
RispondiEliminaI remember I "watched" some stories of Corto Maltese on tv, you'll certainly remember the show "Supergulp". But, maybe because I was just a child, I was not fascinated by Corto, at that age I could not appreciate a character like him so different from the average comics heroes.
RispondiEliminaCorto Maltese is an original character. Very different from any others. It was a big surprise when, in 1971, the "Corriere dei Piccoli" pubblished his adventures. We wasn't preparated at a similar revolution. Because "A Ballad of the Salty Sea" was an autenthic new in the comics world. Today is a cult. A masterpiece of comics of XX century.
EliminaFor many of my age, Corto Maltese was probably the one who put the passion for travel in our heads.
RispondiEliminaIt's true. Reading the Corto Maltese comics has stimulated my imagination and my desire to travel. A mythical character in the world of comics.
